Raymond Carter

For the next 2 pages it takes you into the mind of the rapist and ends with this paragraph – He knew who she was, nothing more than a whore. He would take from her what she valued so much. He had taken it from the others, only they weren’t quite as pretty as this one. He’d shown them who was boss. He’s show her as well.

Beautiful, Julie Stevenson the young ballerina

Just two days before leaving for Padre Island, Julie found herself frustrated and angry. Rehearsal had been brutal. Her concentration was off and Michael repeatedly made her go over her whole routine. She didn’t think she could bare it when he kept her after everyone else had gone. They worked for over an hour in a futile attempt to get her back on track. It took hundreds of hours to achieve the graceful movements needed to portray a symphony in flesh and bone. On opening night, one would think the grace and beauty poured out of the performer as thought such a symphony existed without effort. In reality the execution was based on an obsession with excellence and was achieved with sweat.

David McRay – A Dallas Prosecutor

Descending the darkened stairways of Doug’s Gym, he felt much better. His brief workouts had a mellowing effect, allowing him to get through the rest of the day. Nothing was worse than trying to eat lunch with your stomach tied in knots. He marveled at those who seemed to be able to walk out of the courtroom and leave it all behind. Though the other prosecutors often conferred with him on legal matters, when it came to the more sociable aspects of life, he usually found himself alone. To David being a prosecutor was more than just a job. He struggled to understand what was happening in the country, and how that affected justice as crime increased. It seemed as if the world had gone mad, as the spirit of lawlessness was spreading across the land like wild fire. The penal system in California recently released thousands of pedophiles back into society, and the defunding police movement was growing in a number of states. In the past, he always prided himself as an independent politically, but lately he saw little hope for the country.

Peggy Newman – News anchor and lover to David McRay

When they first met, he was taken aback by her presence. She was a striking woman and years of standing in front of a television camera had given her an aura of poise and breeding that demanded attention. Thought he’d often admired her on the evening news, she was even more striking in person.

Emily Jorgenson – Defense attorney and former lover to David McRay.

The early years of breaking into the legal profession, especially as a woman, had been grueling and required extreme dedication and devotion. Through the years her male counterparts had made a major error that worked to her advantage: they underestimated her ability. She used her feminine wiles to gain leverage, but in the end, it was hard work that brought her ultimate success. She had been friendly with opposing attorneys and many had relaxed, opting to spend their weekends on the golf courses while she burned the midnight oil. Their presumption of an easy was usually discovered too late: in court.

Christopher, Julie’s boyfriend.

They’d made so many plans. Less than a month ago he’d spent an entire afternoon kicking around town in search of an engagement ring. Their trip to the coast – off. He’s saved enough money in the hopes they could spend Christmas vacation at Vail. Even his fraternity brothers were saddened. Everyone thought they made the perfect couple. “Why won’t she see me,” he agonized. “Fuck it,” he stammered, “Julie, you’ll see me one way or the other.” Moving awkwardly to the small refrigerator, he grabbed the remaining beer and then groped around the room for his keys.

Charlotte Stevenson, Julie’s mother.

Charlotte knew she needed patience. She had struggled valiantly to raise her daughter according to the teachings of the church but now doubted her efforts. Ever since the divorce there had been a gradual distancing between her and Julie. Now after the attack, there was no real communication. She believed her daughter had been promiscuous. Many times, she’d waited up for Julie when she wasn’t home at the appointed time. When she did come in her clothes were often wrinkled and at times there was the smell of alcohol on her breath. She tried so hard to be a good mother, but her efforts were thwarted as Julie rebelled against all she stood for.

Frank Evans – Hard nose cop, and friend to David McRay.

Frank Evans was the best cop David had ever known, “I’ll tell you what we really need McRay is a death squad. Give me six months with five good men and I will make your job a lot easier.”  David hated it when Frank pushed that hard. Some ideas were better left unspoken, even in jest.

Father Reed – The Priest

Father Reed had just turned fifty-seven. His short hair was entirely gray, accenting his deep, penetrating pure hazel eyes. His lanky, energetic five-eight frame, always moving in a brisk and determined manner, left many in wonder at his zealousness towards the church. Gazing across the lawns of Saint Michael’s from his second story perch, he reflected on the events of his life. After a distraught youth, coupled with great feelings of guilt, he’d finally found solace in his commitment to the church. A cold and indifferent father married to a domineering, smothering mother had left him with conflicting emotional battles, concerning his sexuality. Celibacy, after a call to the priesthood, found him devoting all his energies to the glory of God.

Marian – Emily’s close friend.

Emily and Marian both felt great enjoyment in their friendship; they were growing closer and closer. In some ways Emily felt the love between them was stronger than in many remanences. They understood each other thoroughly and were cognizant of their similar as well as diverse feelings in all things. These matching and unmatching created the sustained interest in the relationship.
